Meales Onwheals gets a taste for arson

Meales Onwheals decided that it was again time to teach the Romans a lesson on not building stuff in his territory. This time the Romans had built a Limes tower and it had to go so a raiding he went...

This is scenario six, Outpost Attack, from the main rules, in which the Barbarians have to smoke out the garrison of the tower. The Caledonians set up six deployment/ambush points with the ones in the woods to the east of the tower, the swamp and hill to the south east looking like being the most useful as the Roman deployment zone was in the south east of the table (bottom right corner).

The Caledonian levy under Grin Gupdrear deployed from the woods and looked menacingly at the tower, torches in hand. The main Roman force deployed with a skirmish screen to their flank. As the skirmishers headed to the hills a large Caledonian force charged into them.

After a brief fight the Romans were routed from the field, although things were not looking good for Walksalot with the main Roman force looking for revenge...

The Romans charged in and after a one sided fight, which wiped out one group and pushed the other back, Walksalot then decided that it was time to live up to his name and withdraw at speed. Meanwhile some Roman archers had turned up in the southern woods and were using the levy and slingers in the swamp as target practice. Unbeknown to them Meales Onwheals had parked his chariots out of sight around the corner of the woods.

Meales Onwheals charged and jumped from his chariots to catch the evading archers in the rear, causing casualties and panic. Walksalot continued his withrawal and Centurio Postumus realigned the main Roman force to meet this new threat.

With the main Roman force advancing Meales Onwheals retired back to his chariots.

The Romans charged the levy hoping to save their chums in the tower, but it was a tough fight to get to the tower and before they got there they could see flames everywhere. It was too late.
