The French are laying siege to the fortress of Coressmill, near the town of St Stephenage. However, they lack vital siege equipment (ie, picks & shovels!). The French must escort the wagon containing the siege equipment from the entry point at M6, to the exit at A2.
The Spanish put their main deployment point in E8 and their moveable one in A5 behind a barricade. The French turned up in force with the voltigeurs on the left flank of the column and the dragoons to the right.
The voltigeurs advanced through the vineyard and up onto the hill with the main force forming line to their right.
The dragoons raced into the woods hoping to secure the right flank. The Spanish deployed the light infantry into the woods to the south of the church and managed to get the moveable deployment point around the back of the buildings allowing the guerrillas to deploy into a good position behind the northern hill. The Spanish plan was coming together nicely with light troops holding both flanks.
The voltigeurs advanced but immediately came under devastating fire from the Spanish light troops in the woods to their front.
The dragoons dismounted and set up a firing position at the edge of the woods.
With the main French force approaching the Spanish militia deployed next to the buildings and behind the barricades. This would be a tough nut for the French to crack.
However, the cry went up from the French, "deployment point captured, victory is in hand". Unfortunately, this only dropped the Spanish morale by one point.
The guerrillas moved up into a firing position on the northern hill and traded shots with the dragoons. Both sides took casualties. The Spanish light infantry continued to pour fire into the voltigeurs and one group took fright and hid behind the main line.
With the main French line lacking any intention to advance the guerrillas and miltia opened up at maximum range, slowly adding shock, which the solitary leader was having difficulty rallying. Rumours that the Major deserted his post in the line, when he thought that his lover in the fleeing skirmisher group, had been injured, have been most vigorously denied!
The voltigeurs were trading fire with the Spanish light infantry and were coming off best, even killing the Spanish officer. Things weren't looking so good here for the Spanish so the light infantry retired back to the church. On the other flank the guerrillas had seen off the dragoons who mounted up and retired to the rear of the woods.
The guerrillas then advanced to take the position in the woods recently occupied by the dragoons. With the main French line taking fire and casualties the only unit still advancing was the solitary group of heroic voltigeurs under the command of Lt Ori Revour. He was heard to be muttering "merde, it would have been nice to have some support, I seemed to be fighting the whole damned Spanish force on my own!".
However, with the French players morale literaly failing the game was called with a Spanish victory. Looks like the Spanish might afterall be able to raise the siege of Coresmill.
I believe Major Beaufoon has since written to the parents of Pierre, the only voltigeur line infantryman to actually die in the attack, to express his sincere regrets.
